DRAWING CHALLENGE : STEAM-PUNK CHARACTER

After a while away I now have something to post, I have had issues with my tablet and computer programs so have a backlog of work that needs to be completed and uploaded, I will be doing this over the next day or so as i know have a replacement tablet. Luckily one of the pieces in this section of unfinished work was a steam punk drawing challenge, (something I've worked in before in previous posts. So I decided to get back into the work by taking on this first.

STEAM - PUNK CHARACTER SILHOUETTES.

I first found my old page on silhouettes, I really remembered liking these shapes and wanted to use another one of them, this provided the opportunity I needed. After thinking a while and looking in detail at each silhouette I chose No. 4. I chose this because of how interesting and strange a shape it is, the perspective looks distorted due to the skinny legs but I liked this.

SILHOUETTE ORIGINAL.

This is the original silhouette I had quickly made isolated and scaled up, obviously this needed some work done on it before using the shape as a silhouette, using a overlay I created a slightly more suitable and realistic shape.

CLEANED UP SILHOUETTE.

This cleaned up version is a better representation of the human form, I still kept the skinny legs but made them look like legs, gave a essence of a face and a better sized head, I also added some shoulder pad shapes to make it more interesting.

SILHOUETTE AND BACKGROUND.

INVERTED SILHOUETTE AND BACKGROUND.

I added a background to lift the silhouette off the page. I also made an inverted version because it shows what of the background I can and cant see and is sometimes easier to do line-work upon. throughout the drawing I switched between these two. I also scaled the legs up as to be proportionate in length at-least.

SOURCE BOARD.
I made this source board to help with designing some shapes and objects on my character. It will also come in handy later if I include colour in my design.

ROUGH LINE SKETCH.

This is the line sketch I achieved, I liked adding the small details to show it is steam-punk. I changed the shoes and played with the trousers most notably.

ROUGH SKETCH OVER BACKGROUND & SILHOUETTE.

FINAL CONCEPT

For the Final concept I used a overlay to get some cleaned up line work, though I kept the sketch underneath for finer lines and to show construction. I finally added the shading to show different materials and sections.

FINAL CONCEPT COLOUR.
This is the coloured version, I used different shades of colours from the source sheet. I think the colour scheme enhances the steam-punk feel.
